The seemingly quaint and charming title of this painting by Mark Gertler belies the terrifying nature of it. Haunted figures are stuck on a seemingly unending, horrifying carousel ride, reflecting the horrors of the First World War. Considered to be Gertler's greatest masterpiece, this work, which can be seen at Tate Britain, was thought to have been inspired by a carousel in Hampstead Heath near where the artist lived.
