The Toilet of Venus, more commonly known as The Rokeby Venus is the Spanish Golden Age painter, Diego Velázquez’s only surviving nude. A century ago, the painting was famously slashed by the suffragette, Mary Richardson. But what is it about this Velázquez nude that makes it so provocative as a paragon of feminine beauty, asks Ben Street.
